SHEILA'S STORY

Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

I will admit it.  My “church” isn’t your ordinary church.  Nope.  Just last Monday I am confident my “felon among the faithful” ratio was a little skewed from your normal Sunday morning crowd.
But OH!
How I love my church.

Across that little group is miracle after miracle.  Over there is a woman who was once completely written off as worthless now experiencing motherhood and freedom!  Across the way is a man who was so wrapped up by the powerful lure of lust that it almost strangled his testimony and future and now HE is the “go to guy” for helping to deliver others!  Over there is the convicted murderer sitting next to the abused drug addict and his daughter praising, worshipping, and more importantly WITNESSING at every turn as to the amazing power of CHRIST!
Story after story.  Miracle after miracle.
For all of the energy draining drama a day in FREEDOM CHURCH may look to extract from me (yesterday especially), the stories are what keep me going, keep me seeking, keep me praising and keep me thanking!
1 Chronicles 29:11
Living Bible (TLB)
11 Yours is the mighty power and glory and victory and majesty. Everything in the heavens and earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as being in control of everything.

That brings me today to Sheila…
In short…Sheila was a drug addict and a clever one at that.  She was industrious when it came to her addiction.  She catered too and pursued it for years.  Then came the abuse. So much so that she did her best to “kill it”.  Fortunately she didn’t, but she paid for trying.  13 years for trying.  Yet GOD did in her what GOD loves to do. Create beauty from ashes.
Isaiah 61:3
…he will give: beauty for ashes; joy instead of mourning; praise instead of heaviness.

Flash forward to a rainy Monday night in April and a little gym on the campus of a little congregation in a little town.  With microphone in hand, this clever drug addict, this felon, spoke of a very BIG GOD!  She shared the wonderful and amazing transformation of CHRIST in her life.  Her message was a simple one.
Just ask.

Time after time in her life she cried out to the Lord for help and guess what, HE HELPED!
Psalm 107:19
Then they cried to the Lord in their troubles, and he helped them and delivered them.

Financial blessings.  Ministry opportunities.  Healing and peace giving words.
Deliverance and hope flowed off her tongue! Who would have thought?

And while the world sometimes still sees Sheila for what she did, GOD and those HE has placed in her path see her for what she IS!
His daughter!
His ambassador!
His TRUSTING friend!

And she wants us to know it!

We can all learn a lot from Sheila.  We can learn that in spite of “where we have been”, GOD can turn things around and take us on a journey and to places we couldn’t have imagined!  All we need to do is ASK!
Matthew 7:8
For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

And then watch what GOD will do!
Ephesians 3:20 (V)
…God who can do so many awe-inspiring things, immeasurable things, things greater than we ever could ask or imagine through the power at work in us…

Thank you Sheila!
Thank you JESUS!

Love you all!
HAVE A BLESSED DAY!

"PUT A LITTLE WORD ON IT"

Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

I am stepping into several new opportunities in the coming months.  One is being a part of a team who is going into one of our local jails to share the hope of Christ via “Life’s Healing Choices”, a book and teaching from John Baker.  Our “seed planting” team as we have been tagged has been given 90 minutes a week to share this teaching, share the gospel message and open doors for future recovery and re-engagement opportunities for the inmates.

I have to admit, I am a little apprehensive about this one.  It is new territory for me.  But excited nonetheless!  Why shouldn’t I be?  GOD has got me.
2 Thessalonians 3:3
English Standard Version (ESV)
...the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you…

And one of the neat things about this chance to serve and share is that I will get to do so under the guidance and leadership of Pastor Templeton.  He is a dear and passionate man of GOD.  I have just been with him a “short time” and our brotherhood is strong!  And as he shared his vision for the class and for prison ministry I was inspired by his simple philosophy when it comes to His ministry.  When you are up against more than you know or tread into areas where you are uncomfortable or confounded, he simply says, “Put a little WORD on it.”

I love that!

Don’t know how to answer that question?
“Put a little WORD on it” and see if the answer doesn’t surface!

Trying to diffuse a tough conflict and traditional methods are failing?
“Put a little WORD on it.”

Confused as to what to do next?
“Put a little WORD on it!”

Brilliant!  And guess what? Perfect advice!
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and USEFUL one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.

I mean all of us encounter situations and circumstances where we don’t have all the right answers.  I know I often face things where I don’t even really understand the question.

But Pastor Templeton is right!  And so is PAUL! GOD'S WORD IS USEFUL!

When we face challenging situations “PUT A LITTLE WORD on it” and see what happens!
GOD promises to “correct the mistakes”.
GOD promises to “show us the truth (provide the proper answer)”.
GOD promises to point us and train us in the way we should go!

So use that GOD-BREATHED WORD on it!
Ephesians 6:13, 15
You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get…God’s Word is an indispensable weapon.

What are you facing today that is more than you can handle?  What questions are being asked of you that you can’t possibly answer on your own?  Are you getting ready to start something new, step into new territory, or deal with an unfamiliar problem?
Don’t stress!
Just “put a little WORD on it”!

GOD will handle the rest!
I love you all!

"SHOWING OFF'

Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

For the first 4 and ½ years or so of my recovery I was unable to play golf due to the damage I caused to myself from excessive drinking.  I suffer from alcoholic neuropathy. And while it hasn’t improved substantially, I made the decision to not allow the enemy to steal the joy I get from playing a round of golf.  So in spite of occasionally having the club go flying out of my hand or the “next day stiffness”, I have been playing golf.

Now golf for me these days is as much about the camaraderie and the company as it is about the scorecard.  I am not the golfer I used to be.  Not by any stretch.  But I love my rounds today more than ever.  First of all, I can remember most of them.  That wasn’t the case in my past. And I get to spend some time with great folks.

Yesterday was one of those days.

Lovely spring day.  Nice place to play (complete with affordable “still offseason” rate) and a nice group of fellas to hit it with.

And while the round was nothing to write home about, there was a moment during the round that was.

We got to talking about the blessings of GOD in our lives; times when GOD’s faithfulness and provision became tangible.

I shared my story of “the check”. (An earlier DISPATCH from around Christmas you can look it up on the blog page - ahopxenia.com - FREEDOM tab).  Then one of the fellas shared a story about when faced with a seemingly insurmountable debt, he hit his knees and GOD provided!  That inspired another story about a kind nurse who after meeting his son with innumerable health challenges since birth was compelled to help their family at the perfect time with the perfect amount.

Philippians 4:19
Amplified Bible (AMP)
19 And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

What was remarkable about each account is that “what was needed” when asked for in faith, was supplied!  In fact in each situation it was almost to “the penny”.  That prompted one of the men in the group to say in his case it was “GOD SHOWING OFF”.

But you know what? GOD loves to “show off”.
Ephesians 3:20
Living Bible (TLB)
20 Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.

GOD is still in the business of “showing off” we just need to be paying attention; watching and appreciating those around us who, by faith, have seen GOD do the impossible.

I mean just yesterday GOD showed off to me with:
A once hopeless orphan being baptized.
A 68 year old angry alcoholic becoming a gentle warrior for Christ.
And 3 suspect golfers sharing His wonderful provision and impact.

And that was between 12 and 7pm!
Mark 10:27
…with God everything is possible.

So let me ask. Are you facing impossibility today?  Is there a debt that seems beyond reconciliation? Is there a crisis that seems destined for disaster?  Have faith! EXERCISE IT! Trust the truth of GOD that EVERYTHING is POSSIBLE!

I believe GOD is warming up to to “show off a little” more…

I love you all!

VANESSA'S STORY - April 24th...

Two need jobs in the worst way. Bills, pressure, phone calls and threats were starting to mount. Another was facing family strife. Misinformation, misplaced anger and misguided agendas were robbing every inkling of peace. Another was having to say goodbye to mom who just lost her fight with cancer.
Call upon call, text upon text adversity after adversity. There was real fatigue in their voices, real desperation in the tone of the texts.
These are the days when I wish a magic wand or a special secret “stash” of assistance was available. These are the days when the truth, while divine, doesn’t go down very easy.
And what is that truth? What does GOD say about these trials and adversity? HE says weather them. HE says find joy in them. HE says press through them. Transformation is coming. Learning is coming.
James 1:2-4
Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.
I know. That is a tough one to swallow when we are at our wits end or feeling overwhelmed.
But GOD calls us to persevere when things are tough; to trust HIM to see us through it as I shared yesterday. That is why I want to share a little about Vanessa this morning.
I was fortunate yesterday to hear Vanessa’s story.
On the outside you could see the impact of her tough bringing up. Her mother traded her childhood for drugs. At 12 years old she became a mother herself. Her mother’s addiction forced them into multiple stints in emergency housing and poverty. Vanessa too turned to and struggled with drugs and the trouble they cause. Her mother then died when she turned 14. With a 2 year old in tow she and he were moved to “the system”.
The future looked bleak. Hopeless. She seemed destined for an ending like her mother’s.
Yet it was when things were the most difficult that Vanessa learned to PERSEVERE. With the help of her new community and a steely resolve, she emerged from her apparent hopeless state to be the keynote at a community breakfast event telling corporate and community leaders about the power of perseverance.
And as she turned her attention to inspire the kids attending the event, she shared one of the most insightful analogies I've heard in a while.
“Kids”, she said, “Deal with life challenges like the levels of a Playstation game. You keep working, playing and trying until you reach that next level, don’t you give up.”
GOOD WORDS. GOD WORDS.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.
Regardless of the adversities and challenges that we face we need to listen to Vanessa and the apostle Paul. We must meet the challenge head on. We must TRUST GOD that we can get to “the next level” of life’s game. We must remember that there is joy in the challenge and reward at the end.
If Vanessa could find her way through her challenges; drugs, a neglected childhood, and a preteen pregnancy, to emerge a productive and impactful nurse and mother; then we too can emerge from the challenges we face!
Don’t you agree?
So keep playing to the next level my friends!
2 Corinthians 4:9
… God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.
I love you all!

MAKE THE CHANGE

Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

There he sat.  He was a little worn out.  A few nights sleeping in a tent will do that.  He was homeless.  Struggling. Waiting for a bed to begin the “treatment” process one more time.  He hadn’t “used” in a while; no money tends to lead to forced sobriety but I could tell he really didn’t want to continue to use.  He asked, “Is this the bottom”.  I responded as I always do, “Maybe, but they sometimes have basements.”

I am praying this is his bottom.  I am praying his heart is ready for change.  Why? Because the door of opportunity and change is always open with GOD.  Always.
For him. For all of us.
Joel 2:13-14
Change your life, not just your clothes. Come back to God, your God. And here’s why: God is kind and merciful. He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot, This most patient God, extravagant in love, always ready to cancel catastrophe. Who knows? Maybe he’ll do it now, maybe he’ll turn around and show pity. Maybe, when all’s said and done, there’ll be blessings full and robust for your God!

I love that passage.

It says so much about our Father.  He always wants us back!  Even when we have strayed far and long He is there, waiting and praying for our return!
Matthew 23:37
How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…

GOD stands at the ready for when we “are done”.  When we are ready to stop He is ready to begin! Yet how often do we in our stubbornness and self-will continue to “do things our way”? Continuing to suffer on our steam doing our best to manage the consequences and promised discipline of a loving Father?
Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)
11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful...
Be honest.
But the rest of that passage holds the promise that comes with change!
Hebrews 12:11 (cont)
…But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

I believe that my friend has tired of the discipline and is ready to make the necessary changes.  In fact we connected him to a job and lodging to begin the process.  Already GOD is canceling some of the catastrophe in his life.  All it took was a willingness to “change”; to return to GOD!
Acts 3:19
…change your ways! Turn to face God so he can wipe away your sins, pour out showers of blessing to refresh you

The message for my friend is the same for all of us today.  GOD is ready to do a wonderful work in us.  We just need to let Him!

Are there some changes YOU need to make?  (I know I have a BUNCH!)
GOD is ready to shower blessing.  Why are you waiting?

I love you all!

WALK THROUGH IT

WALK THROUGH IT
Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

Psalm 23
…He leads me beside quiet waters.
…He restores my soul…
…Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I fear no evil, for You are with me Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me….
Familiar words for most of us.
Words often reserved for funeral or graveside services.

Yet yesterday for some “unusual” reason they surfaced twice over the course of a “normal” day.

To claim normality and a day at the JEREMIAH TREE in the same sentence is a bit of an oxymoron.  Yesterday’s “normal” included discussions to help a family whose toddler had set the cat on fire so things are never overly normal at 118 West Second in Xenia. But that aside, this passage did indeed surface twice in my day.

The first time was as I was ministering to a distraught individual.  Life, bills, anxiety, troubles at home, and diminishing hope that there would ever be relief were crushing her spirit.  She felt alone, pressured and overwhelmed.  As we walked and cried through the challenges this passage came to mind.
“Though we walk through”…the hard times, the unreasonable expectations, the collection calls, the pending legal actions…we can do so without fear!
Why?
GOD is right there with us.  Rod in hand! Leading the way!
Deuteronomy 31:6
…God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you.

There would be calmer times ahead.  GOD is taking she and us there.  There are still settings in the future, GOD is planning and preparing them.  So we and she can take heart!  GOD wasn’t going anywhere! In fact GOD was and is right at her and our side!
Deuteronomy 20:3-4
Don’t waver in resolve. Don’t fear. Don’t hesitate. Don’t panic. God, your God, is right there with you, fighting with you against your enemies, fighting to win.
This was the message for this one so full of tears and fear.

Then came the second time this little passage surfaced. Pastor Eric in preparation for Sunday’s service shared a little clip from THE BIBLE.  It was a familiar scene.
David confronting Goliath.
But the team of Downey and Burnett exercised a little license and surmised that David perhaps first uttered those powerful words “though I walk through” as he was preparing to take down the most powerful adversary in the land.
Creative license aside, the power of this passage is clear.
Whether we are facing mounting pressures or a 9+ foot Philistine, the
TRUTH is this...

GOD will "walk through" it with us!

Hebrews 13:5-6
Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly quote,
God is there, ready to help;
I’m fearless no matter what.
Who or what can get to me?

What giant is in your face today?  What pressures or overwhelming circumstances loom in the near distance?  Don’t fear them.  GOD is with you.  His comfort and protection go ahead of you.
Trust Him.

He will "walk through" it with you!

I love you all!
HAVE A BLESSED DAY!

OLD...NEW

Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

Ephesians 4:21-24 (V)
If you have heard Jesus and have been taught by Him according to the truth that is in Him, then you know to take off your former way of life, your crumpled old self—to take a fresh breath and to let God renew your attitude and spirit. Then you are ready to put on your new self, modeled after the very likeness of God: truthful, righteous, and holy.

The enemy does his best each and every day to convince us that our relationship with Jesus is weak and ineffective.  He does his best to layer on guilt, shame, uncertainty and accusation to keep us trapped in the sins and the decisions of the past.  He tries time and time again to blind us to who we are and what we have as children of GOD as followers of Christ.  He tries to keep us stuck in our "crumpled old selves".
Don’t let him do that to you today.

Listen to Paul.

Today is the day to breathe in the promise of your new life in Christ!
Today is the day to take Jesus at HIS word, to embrace HIS truth and renew your attitude, your mind and spirit in accordance with HIS!
Romans 12:2
...be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think...

Today is as good a day as any to put on this NEW self, embrace what new thing GOD has planned for you and step boldly into the day and your purpose!
Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV)
Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing…

Day after day I work with folks whose broken past continues to try and dictate their future.  Yet GOD is doing a new thing.  The OLD is just that, OLD.  GOD has something wonderful in store for today if we will just look for it and embrace it!
2 Corinthians 5:17
..anyone united with the Messiah…is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons!

Last night I handed a “one year clean” Bible to someone who just one year ago fell over in a NA meeting so high from heroin she couldn’t control herself and was rushed to the ER.
OLD LIFE GONE! NEW LIFE BURGEONING!

Then there was the young woman sharing from the keyboard a love song of hope to the hurting that was birthed from a lengthy battle with depression and hopelessness.
OLD LIFE GONE! NEW LIFE BURGEONING!

Then there was the old salty vet with a long history of anger issues and alcoholism rushing up the stairs to the stage to request that I be in the tank with him Sunday as he will be baptized.
OLD LIFE GONE! NEW LIFE BURGEONING!

My friends, Jesus is in the RESTORATION and NEWNESS business.  And while there is no way for me to know the circumstances or the challenges facing you today, I can say for certain that JESUS is waiting and ready to intervene and take what may seem like one more “same old same old” day and do something new!

Won’t you do as these friends did and let HIM?
Ezekiel 36:26 (LB)
And I will give you a new heart—I will give you new and right desires—and put a new spirit within you.

Today is as good a day as any!

I love you all!
Be blessed today!

HE TOOK IT ALL

Have you thanked Him?
Have you praised Him?
Have you made it your priority to agree and cooperate with Him today?
Have you taken that deep breath and listened for what He has for you today?
1 Timothy 2:1 (The Message)
1-3The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.
Some days it is best to leave the message to the truly gifted. Days like GOOD FRIDAY are like that. So for today’s DISPATCH I defer to Max.
I am praying that ALL have a blessed EASTER weekend. Allow the TRUTH of the RESURRECTION to refresh and inspire you! Pastor G…
The Spit of the Soldiers – Max Lucado…
The whipping was the first deed of the soldiers.
The crucifixion was the third. (No, I didn’t skip the second. We’ll get to that in a moment.) Though his back was ribboned with wounds, the soldiers loaded the crossbeam on Jesus’ shoulders and marched him to the Place of a Skull and executed him.
We don’t fault the soldiers for these two actions. After all, they were just following orders. But what’s hard to understand is what they did in between.
Here is Matthew’s description:
Jesus was beaten with whips and handed over to the soldiers to be crucified. The governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s palace, and they all gathered around him. They took off his clothes and put a red robe on him. Using thorny branches, they made a crown, put it on his head, and put a stick in his right hand. Then the soldiers bowed before Jesus and made fun of him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spat on Jesus. Then they took his stick and began to beat him on the head. After they finished, the soldiers took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified. (Matt. 27:26–31 NCV)
The soldiers’ assignment was simple: Take the Nazarene to the hill and kill him. But they had another idea. They wanted to have some fun first. Strong, rested, armed soldiers encircled an exhausted, nearly dead, Galilean carpenter and beat up on him. The scourging was commanded. The crucifixion was ordered. But who would draw pleasure out of spitting on a half-dead man?
Spitting isn’t intended to hurt the body—it can’t.
Spitting is intended to degrade the soul, and it does.
What were the soldiers doing? Were they not elevating themselves at the expense of another? They felt big by making Christ look small.
Allow the spit of the soldiers to symbolize the filth in our hearts. And then observe what Jesus does with our filth. He carries it to the cross.
Through the prophet he said, “I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting” (Isa. 50:6 NIV). Mingled with his blood and sweat was the essence of our sin.
God could have deemed otherwise. In God’s plan, Jesus was offered wine for his throat, so why not a towel for his face? Simon carried the cross of Jesus, but he didn’t mop the cheek of Jesus. Angels were a prayer away.
Couldn’t they have taken the spittle away?
They could have, but Jesus never commanded them to. For some reason, the One who chose the nails also chose the saliva. Along with the spear and the sponge of man, he bore the spit of man.
The sinless One took on the face of a sinner so that we sinners could take on the face of a saint.
Thank Jesus for taking your spit today…
I love you all!
Have a blessed EASTER weekend.
